Discussions during the 2014 Strategic Planning Workshop in Cairns, Australia involving the ATBC Council and Strategic Planning Committee focused on identifying major gaps in training, mentoring, communications, and advocacy that provide new and timely opportunities for engagement by ATBC leadership and members.

To begin to fill these gaps, we are moving forward to develop a broad Capacity Building Program (CBP) for ATBC members. We will use this program as a means to increase, strengthen, and unify our membership worldwide and to help all ATBC members become more effective as leaders in communicating the importance of tropical ecosystems and tropical biological diversity to policy makers, conservation organizations, and the public.

ATBC is developing a Capacity Building Program with four major components:

  1. Early research skills training program
  2. Mentoring program (interested mentors and mentees can sign up during the upcoming registration period)
  3. Communications & advocacy training
  4. Needs and effectiveness assessment

All four of these components will dovetail with each other in several key ways, but each has a unique emphasis. We are actively seeking funding for these programs.

We initiate our our Capacity Building activities during the 2015 Annual Meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii, July 12-16. These will also be offered at  the 2016 annual Meeting in Montpellier.

If you are interested in serving on the Capacity Building Committee or in supporting these efforts, please contact Robin Chazdon, ATBC Executive Director.
