Manager, Geospatial Scientist – Field Museum of Natural History (Chicago)

The Field Museum’s Keller Science Action Center (KSAC) translates museum science, collections, and partnerships into results for conservation and quality of life. Its interdisciplinary teams of ecologists, social scientists, and specialists work with communities, scientists, conservation practitioners, and public agencies to co-create knowledge and action for biodiversity conservation, territorial management, and human well-being.

The Manager, Geospatial Scientist will oversee and develop the application of geospatial science across KSAC’s Andes-Amazon and Chicago Region programs. The role combines advanced technical expertise with management, ensuring that spatial analysis, remote sensing, cartography, and data systems directly inform KSAC projects from planning through execution, analysis, and follow-up. Expected projects include expert participation in biological and social inventories of remote areas of the Andes-Amazon region, modeling of biotic and abiotic assets of unvisited natural areas, application of novel remote sensing technologies to inventory large tropical landscapes, and monitoring of conservation impacts. The Manager will also establish shared geospatial standards and data governance, supervise staff and collaborators, and strengthen geospatial capacity across teams and partner organizations.

Candidates should have an advanced degree in a related field (or equivalent experience) and at least seven years of progressively responsible experience, including technical leadership, project management, and supervision. Advanced skills in Esri, QGIS, and R, Python, or Google Earth Engine are required, along with experience in satellite imagery, spatial statistics, and spatial databases. Fluency in Spanish or Portuguese, knowledge of Andes-Amazon conservation and governance issues, and willingness to travel and do fieldwork are also required. A PhD and experience with participatory mapping, GeoAI, LiDAR or drones, and web mapping are preferred.
