GEF-Satoyama Project – Call for Proposals

The United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS), GEF-Satoyama Project announced the second Call for Proposals for site-based projects in two biodiversity hotspots: “Madagascar and Indian Ocean Islands Biodiversity Hotspot” and “Tropical Andes Biodiversity Hotspot”. Proposals can be submitted until 23 February 2016.

Each selected project will receive up to USD 100,000. Projects are expected to run for up to three years and make larger global impacts through leveraging additional resources, replication and sharing of knowledge under the GEF-Satoyama Project. This Call for Proposals is the second of two selection cycles, the first of which targeted the “Indo-Burma Biodiversity Hotspot” and took place in November 2015.

The GEF-Satoyama Project focuses on production landscapes and seascapes (SEPLS) and aims to implement concrete steps towards building a society in harmony with nature. The objective is to mainstream conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and ecosystem services while improving human well-being in SELPS. The Project is thus part of an effort to achieve the Aichi Biodiversity Targets under the Convention on Biological Diversity, as well as the newly established United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The GEF-Satoyama Project was approved by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and launched in September 2015. Since then, the project is executed together with members of the International Partnership for the Satoyama Initiative (IPSI): Conservation International Japan (CI Japan), the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), and UNU-IAS.
