Postdoctoral Research Associate in Paleobotany

Description

POSITION SUMMARY:  A postdoctoral position for one year term appointment, renewable for an additional years to work on the taxonomy and evolution of Cretaceous/Tertiary paleofloras of Patagonia, Argentina, beginning in April 2016, is now opened at the Plant Biology Section, School of Integrative Plant Science, and Cornell University. In this multi-institution project (Cornell University, Pennsylvania State University, and Museo Paleontológico E. Feruglio, Argentina) the Postdoctoral Researcher will work directly in the taxonomy of the Danian Salamanca Formation and the Early Eocene Laguna del Hunco floras, and the K-Pg event in Patagonia by integrating macrofloral, microfloral, and stratigraphic data, and by expanding the systematic paleobotanical work through the time sequence, particularly for addressing questions about the area’s complex biogeographic history.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Primary responsibilities include describing reproductive and vegetative organs of Patagonian fossils and their inclusion within a morphological/molecular phylogenetic framework, creating images of taxonomically important features of the fossil species, and helping with the development of the project’s web-page. In addition, the position has a field work component and visits to the Museo P. Egidio Feruglio, Chubut, and Patagonia, Argentina.
QUALIFICATIONS: Assigned responsibilities require a Ph.D. and advanced knowledge of plant systematics as evidenced by research, publications, and field experience. Experience in Paleobotany is fundamental. The successful incumbent must demonstrate creativity and aptitude to initiate research activities. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
  1. Proficiency with paleobotanical literature and terminology and systematic botany.
  2. Knowledge of phylogenetic programs and techniques.
  3. Familiarity with paleobotanical, anatomical as well as molecular techniques.
  4. Computer skills including experience with database use, Photoshop, Illustrators, etc.
  5. Strong organizational and excellent writing skills.
