In collaboration with Oxford University’s WildCRU, the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research is seeking a highly qualified and motivated postdoctoral candidate to conduct scientific research on the conservation ecology and anthropogenic impacts on giant otters (Pteronura brasiliensis) in the southeastern Peruvian Amazon. The goal of the research program will be to understand how ecological and anthropogenic factors regulate otter populations through impacts on health, reproduction, and survival. Primary anthropogenic threats to giant otters likely include mercury contamination via proximate gold mining activities, introduced pathogens from domestic animals, and conflict with fishermen. Primary ecological factors include fish species composition, distribution, and abundance hydroecology, and habitat size and quality. The position will be for 3-5 years, primarily based in Peru.
