Emerging Challenges in Tropical Science

The Emerging Challenges in Tropical Science Program (ECTS) is a new integrated program of the Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS) designed to catalyze research that addresses the most significant challenges to sustainability in the tropics.

Specifically, the ECTS Program will provide research fellowships, workshop support, and data management and access to promote research in Costa Rica that addresses three emerging challenges to tropical ecosystems:

ECTS Workshops (ECTS-W)

Convenes expert working groups to develop an innovative and competitive research idea and to prepare at least one grant proposal (or preproposal) to support research at one (or more) OTS research station(s). Once a year, OTS will award 1-2 grants, on a competitive basis, for working groups to meet at one of the OTS research stations for 3-7 days.

Deadline:Monday Feb 15th, 2016; first Monday of February in subsequent years. 

ECTS Research Fellowships (ECTS-R)

Supports preliminary field work that initiates new long-term research, builds upon long-term data collected at OTS stations, or provides long-term continuity to ongoing projects started by senior researchers.

Elegibility: Priority will be given to early career scientists from OTS member institutions. Grants will cover OTS station fees for up to 10 weeks.

Deadline:The second Monday in February and the last Monday in June, every year For Program and application details 

ECTS Graduate Student Fellowships (ECTS-GS)

Support initial work for graduate theses focused within an ECTS theme.

Elegibility: Priority will be given to graduate students students working on the long-term research programs or legacy datasets of the stations. Scholarships will cover station fees for up to 10 weeks and include a $700 allowance.

Deadline:1st March and 1st October every year
