JOB DESCRIPTION

Character of Duties: The University of Guam Marine Laboratory is seeking an exceptional candidate to support the mission of the NSF-funded “Guam Ecosystems Collaboratorium” to investigate gene-environment interactions of holobionts and their hologenomes in tropical reef systems. The successful candidate will have proven experience in molecular biology studying phylogenetics, population genetics and gene expression and function of marine organisms. Candidates with expertise in non-marine organisms will also be considered. Applicants should demonstrate a record of successful grant applications and publications to support their knowledge of experimental designs and analyses of large genetic datasets to assess large- and fine-scale population structure of non-model organisms (e.g., SNP detection in RNA-Seq data).

The successful applicant is expected to make contributions to STEM research and education within the UOG EPSCoR program. Opportunities to secure three-months summer salary will be provided. The selected candidate will have opportunities to develop an externally-funded research program and is encouraged to contribute to other local and regional research programs in a supporting role. The successful applicant will be required to develop and teach at least one graduate level course in population, ecological or evolutionary genetics and a second graduate course of personal choice, with a total of two semester-long courses being taught every four semesters. The candidate may also be requested to develop a seminar course in a topic of special interest intermittently.

Salary Level: Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience relevant to the position. The following salary figures are for nine (9) months:

Assistant Professor

$39,473 – $68,237 Per Academic Year

Appointment/Relocation: The position is a nine (9) month faculty position, three-year tenure or non-tenure (1, 2, 3 year) contractual appointment.  The University provides relocation assistance to new employees if hired off-island on a three-year initial contract.  Provided are travel expenses for the applicant and the applicant’s spouse (as defined by Guam Law) and children under the age of 18 by the least expensive and most direct air route from the point of hire and for moving household goods to Guam by the least expensive carrier up to 3,500 pounds for a family and 1,750 pounds for an applicant without dependents.  Insurance of household goods, if desired, is at the employee’s expense.

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Qualifications: 

Minimum: Ph.D. in Population, Ecological or Evolutionary Genetics, Phylogenetics, Systematics, or another relevant field from a U.S. regionally accredited institution or foreign equivalent, with a demonstrated expertise in bioinformatic pipelines to process and analyze “big data”. Must be willing to teach online.

Preferred: Post-doctoral experience (a minimum of one year), and (at least) four first-author peer-reviewed publications, are preferred.
