Webinar: Sociality and multispecies interactions among vertebrates

Webinar organized by the ATBC Thematic Section in Biotic Interactions in Tropical Systems

APRIL 10 2025, 9 AM – 11 AM EST (Bogota time)

Followers, leaders, and freeloaders: Unraveling the dynamic ecology of mixed-species bird flocks

G. Giselle Mangini, Laboratory of Bird Ecology and animal-plant interaction at Instituto de Ecologia Regional (IER) Universidad Nacional de Tucumán-Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas

Short bio: Giselle works mainly in the Yungas forest in Argentina. She studies the dynamics of mixed-species bird flocks and their ecological interactions. Passionate about understanding nature beyond isolated snapshots, her work explores how behavior, food resources, and environmental factors shape bird interactions. She is currently conducting behavioral and bioacoustic studies to understand how different species communicate, the roles of species within mixed-species flocks, and the implications of these social interactions for ecosystem function.

Multi-predator Feeding Aggregations in the Pelagic

Matthew Hansen, IGB Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries

Short bio: Matthew is a post-doctoral researcher working in Berlin, Germany. His work focuses on the functions and mechanisms of group-hunting in pelagic environments. He currently leads a DFG-funded project exploring the interactions between billfish and other predators (avian, mammalian, teleost) as they attack schools of small fish.

Ecological and social drivers of group formation in African ungulates

Meredith Palmer, Center for Biodiversity & Global Change, Yale University

Short bio: Meredith is a conservation scientist with over a decade of experience studying large mammal ecology in African and North American ecosystems. Her current focus lies in integrating in situ and remote biodiversity sensors to develop data-driven strategies for protecting and restoring ecological systems at global scales.
