A full-time position has become vacant within the Lower Murray Laboratory (LML), at Mildura. The LML has a strong record of client-focused, applied ecological research for clients such as the Murray–Darling Basin Authority, catchment management authorities and other State and Commonwealth agencies. Most of our work is focussed within the Murray–Darling Basin and the current research portfolio spans disciplines from chemical-processes and microbes to floodplain trees, including distribution-patterns, biology and behaviour of invertebrates, fish and vegetation associated with freshwater ecosystems. The main purpose of this position are to develop and manage a research program designed to provide independent critical science advice to natural resource managers (NRM). Advice to NRM will be based on high quality science and lead, through publication and other means of dissemination, to adoption of new or modified practises within the NRM community. The position is part of a small team of experienced research and technical staff at Mildura; and of a broader team across both laboratories.

Develop and manage a research program designed to provide independent critical science advice to natural resource managers. Conduct and publish or disseminate high quality research and contribute where appropriate to proposal submissions to external funding sources. Co-supervise or where appropriate supervise Higher Degree by Research postgraduate students as well as supervise research support staff.
DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
To succeed, you will possess:
- Completion of a PhD or equivalent qualifications and demonstrated research experience in the ecology of fauna or flora of rivers, floodplains or wetlands
- A record of peer-reviewed journal publications, conference papers and/or reports, professional or technical contributions
- Demonstrated experience in preparing research proposal submissions to external funding bodies and evidence of success in securing research funding
- Excellent and diverse communication skills to be able to liaise with diverse audiences
- Demonstrated ability to work successfully with non-scientific groups to deliver scientific outcomes
